Echoes Within the Walls
The residence is a contemporary reinterpretation of the family’s ancestral home, the historic Poddar Bari in Lohagora, Narail. The original mansion, emblematic of colonial-era zamindar architecture, featured expansive courtyards and grand proportions that deeply influenced the family’s lifestyle and memories. The new design seeks to bridge the past and present by encapsulating the essence of the old homestead within a modern framework.
At the heart of the design lies a central double-height space, reminiscent of the traditional courtyard, serving as the nucleus around which the home’s functions revolve. This spatial strategy fosters a sense of unity and openness, echoing the communal atmosphere of the ancestral home. The architects drew inspiration from emphasizing monumentality and pure geometry to evoke a sense of timelessness and spiritual resonance.
The residence comprises four detached volumes that converge around the central double-height space and an adjoining water feature. This arrangement facilitates natural ventilation and light, creating dynamic interactions between built forms and voids. Utilizing bricks and crafted windows, the design pays homage to traditional materials while ensuring durability and aesthetic warmth. The exposed brickwork not only provides a tactile quality but also allows the structure to age gracefully, enhancing its character over time. The building’s orientation along the east-west axis, coupled with strategically placed terraces and high openings, optimizes sunlight penetration and cross-ventilation. Rainwater harvesting is ingeniously integrated, with collected water cascading through openings into the central water body, creating a soothing auditory experience.
The design transcends mere aesthetics, delving into the psychological and emotional realms of the inhabitants. By abstracting elements from the Poddar Bari-such as scale, proportion, and spatial hierarchy, the new residence relinks cherished memories, offering a sense of continuity amidst change. The interplay of light, shadow, and materiality crafts an environment that is both familiar and novel, grounding the family in their heritage while embracing contemporary living. This project stands as a testament to the potential of architecture to weave together threads of history, memory, and modernity, creating spaces that are both meaningful and enduring.
